CCHS Projects in NHS American Education Week - November 11-17th
The theme of AEW was "Together: Making Public Schools Great for Every Child." This theme reflects the cooperation and hard work of all education staff and the many parents, community and business members involved in helping students achieve. Students learned that through collaborative relationships (working with various businesses, schools, administrators, parents,) they were able to achieve their goals for AEW.
Christmas Toy Drive NHS students voted to purchase a new toy to bring to the December meeting. Toys were donated to Loaves and Fishes.
Lincoln Literacy NHS members go to Lincoln Elementary School from 8:10 - 8:50 to help the students during their morning reading block. NHS students that are in good standing in their first block class, volunteer as much as possible to help with this program. Lincoln School has the lowest literacy level in the district. (In a report published in the current issue of Reading Research Quarterly, researchers from the Eugene Research Institute conclude that even relatively untrained tutors can help youngsters improve their reading skills.)
NHS Scholarships Traditionally, NHS does several fundraisers to help sponsor 2-3 $100 scholarships that are awarded to a NHS student for help with further educational pursuits.
Foreign Language Elementary Support Program Throughout the school year NHS students offer French and Spanish enrichment classes at the district elementary schools. Students volunteer their time and effort to teach 2 half-hour classes a week for a 4 week period. These are very popular classes in the district, and are quickly filled to capacity.
NHS Service Projects Every NHS member is required to do 21 service points per year of membership. All service projects are verified and recorded. Service projects are community based. Past projects include: painting a cross at a church commemorating a family that died in a car accident, watching children while parents are attending school sponsored activities, helping elderly - leaf raking, house painting, tutoring elementary and secondary students, and many other individual projects.
NHS Induction Ceremony In the spring of each year, NHS members help with the induction ceremony for new members.
NHS Field Trip As a final culmination of a year of hard work, NHS members take an educational field trip. They plan this trip, and spend one day each year enjoying the company of their friends, and learning more about what Colorado has available in educational opportunities.
