Arkansas River Walk Project

GIS Project 2

Our goal is to develop a useable map of the Arkansas River Walk area.  This map will be used by several different agencies as the ARW develops into a first class recreational facility over the next few years.  You will be able to watch the development of the river walk project when you return to Cañon City on vacations from college or your job.  The long-term goal is to have the ARW stretching from the west end of tunnel drive to the east side of Florence Colorado.  Eventually the river walk will move away from the dirt and gravel covering to a more refined surface like concrete or paver bricks.  There will be more natural plants moved into the area to attract even more wildlife and there will be covered resting stations and additional benches along with rest rooms and drinking fountains.  If you have ever been in other cities with well developed river walks you already share part of my vision of our future river walk.

The “ultimate” River Walk…      Visit this site…  http://thesanantonioriverwalk.com/

What ever our river walk is to become we will need a map for planning, visitor use, emergency response, maintenance and future grant proposals.   We need to show adjacent property and we will also plot zoning restrictions on this map in the future.

Our team will work on this map in four sections.

  1. Tunnel Drive to 1st Street

  2. 1St  Street to 9th Street

  3. 9th Street to Raynolds Avenue

  4. Raynolds Avenue to Mackenzie Avenue

These graphics we are overlaying with CAD lines are from the Fremont County GIS Software.

GIS- What's that mean to you?

When each of these sections are finished we will assemble the parts into one map to be added as a theme to the GIS ArcView software so that the Cañon City Rec. Dist. and several other agencies can use it.   Please use the preset layer configuration on your Cadvance file.  Come see Mr. Geesaman to get your (300 point) section assignment.

This lesson was presented to the students on the web to the CAD class on 4-21-03 and left here as an example lesson used in ADDA II.   Bob Bush, Fremont County GIS Authority Director and our ADDA Advisor, Mike Geesaman Instructor.
