173 days per year, 8 hours per day; plus CCPD Duty
MISSION
STATEMENT The mission of the School Resource Officer
at the Canon City High School is to promote and maintain a
safe, healthy and productive learning environment, while
acting as a positive role model for all students at the high
school. The SRO will be working in a
cooperative, pro-active, problem-solving partnership between
the Canon City Police Department and RE-1 Schools.
PURPOSE
The School Resource Officer (SRO) will provide a variety of
educational opportunities to the school community, provide
informal information and advice to students, parents and
faculty, and provide a positive law enforcement presence in
the school community. School Resource Officer (SRO) is
not intended to serve as security personnel in schools or to
enforce school disciplinary policies.
DESCRIPTION
OF GENERAL DUTIES
The
School Resource Officer will:
- Provide
classroom instruction for any teacher at Canon City High
School in the following areas: Project PRINCE or
other Law-Related Education programs, Drug Abuse
Resistance Education, Crime Prevention, Safety Programs,
Drug and Alcohol Awareness and other topics as requested.
- Act
as a visible and active law enforcement figure at Canon
City High School, dealing with any criminal-related areas.
- Serve
as a positive liaison between the Canon City Police
Department, the parents, the neighborhoods surrounding
Canon City High School, and the Canon City High School
community.
- Be
a resource for students and parents, and provide
information on other resources available.
- Assist
in providing in-service training to school district
personnel.
- Counsel
students in both negative and positive situations.
- Assist
other law enforcement officers with outside investigations
concerning students attending the school to which the SRO
is assigned.
- Participate
in activities outside the regular school day, including
but not limited to attending PTO meetings, parent-teacher
conferences and extracurricular events of the school
(sporting events, concerts, performances, etc).
- Provide
resources to CCHS students and staff in contacting and
bringing in other criminal justice agencies.
- Make
appropriate referrals to school administrators, for
student misconduct and school disruption.
- Protect
lives and property for the citizens and public school
students and staff of Canon City High School.
- Enforce
federal, state and local criminal laws and ordinances.
- Investigate
criminal activity committed on or adjacent to school
property.
POSITION
REQUIREMENTS
The School Resource Officer must meet the
requirements for a CCPD Police Officer I position.
