INFORMATION SHEET

TEEN COURT DEFENDANT/PARENTS OR GUARDIANS

The purpose of Teen Court is to keep juveniles from committing a second offense, repair the harm cased by the offense, have the juvenile take responsibility for his/her actions, and to help the juvenile become a positive member of the community.

The trial is a sentencing hearing since the defendant must plead guilty in order to be eligible for the teen court program.  You will be notified by mail of the date of your hearing or contacted by telephone to set up an interview.  If you have concerns after receiving the information, please call the Teen Court Coordinator, John Evans at (719) 269-0170.

All hearings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.

Teen court volunteers must arrive by 5:00 PM.

Important information for you to know:

·        A parent or guardian is required to be with the defendant at all court appearances.

·        Sentencing is determined by a group of the defendant’s peers.

·        Sentencing may include payment of restitution.

·        Sentencing may include community service (volunteering for a non-profit organization).

·        Sentencing may include jury duty by the defendant at a later Teen Court hearing.

·        Other sentencing options are possible.  Examples include apology letters, essays, or educational classes.

·        A fee of $50 is to be paid by the defendant at the time he/she signs the Teen Court Agreement.

·        The defendant has three months to complete the sentence unless a longer period is necessary to complete the requirements of the sentence.

If you have questions or concerns, please call the Teen Court office (269-0171).
